Blaming the Patriarchal Family and State

Chapter 8

“Violence Lies in wait for Women at Home”

Framing VAW as Domestic Violence

On July 26, 2013, the following murder report appeared in Nuestro Diario with the headline “Atentado cerca del Puente La Asunción: Víctima estudiaba derecho” (Attack close to the La Asunicón Bridge: The victim studied law).

Ingrid Gabriela Conedera Vargas, 31 years old was shot yesterday by two men who were travelling on a motorcycle. The attack occurred at 7:20 on 7th street, at the end of Zone 1, close to the La Asunción Bridge when the victim was headed in her car to the Procuradoria General de la Nación (Attorney General’s Office) where she had been working for seven years. The assassins hit her with two shots to the head and one in the right thigh. When Conedera lost consciousness the car kept moving out of control until a retaining wall stopped its path. Municipal firemen took her still alive to the hospital San Juan de Dios where she died (dejó de existir) at 9:45. Luis Fernando Juarez Paiz, subdirector of the hospital said that they tried to stabilize her but one of the wounds she received in the head killed her. Investigators who worked at the scene of the crime found the cell phone, documents and money of the deceased in the car for which they dismiss the possibility that it was a robbery attempt. At the site they did not find shells so they believe that the murderers used a revolver. Mariela Vargas, mother of the victim said that her daughter leaves orphaned a 10-year old girl, who just minutes before she had left at her [the mother’s] house to take her to school. Pide Investigar. (They ask that it be investigated). Vladimir Aguilar, Attorney General said that he had communicated with Telémaco Pérez, director of the PNC, in order to “investigar el crimen al fondo” (get to the bottom of the crime). “It is unlikely that they attacked her due to a case because she only saw cases of voluntary jurisdiction (procesos de jursdicción voluntaria)” he indicated. Conedera was assistant to the Departmento de Procuracion and a student of law at the University Mariano Galvez.

Like many of the murder reports that I discussed in the previous chapter this report takes up a whole page of which the text is just a small portion. There is a photo of the victim on a gurney going into the hospital, a picture of police standing around the wrecked car, another of her crying mother, and a diagram of “details of the crime” that shows how she was attacked and how the car crashed. There is also a small photo of “Gaby” (as they called her) smiling into the camera with a box that says that her family and friends describe her as a “likeable woman with high moral values” (una mujer agradable con altos valores éticos). The two asi opinans state that Guatemalans are tired of so many murders and that it “isn’t even necessary to rob someone to kill them.
